Professional Carpet Cleaner Techniques: Urine Stain Removal
Sure, hiring someone might be easier in the short haul, but perhaps you’re in the mood to get down and dirty. Perhaps you want to fight your carpet’s stains yourself in an epic struggle for a great looking floor. Perhaps you’re just too embarrassed to admit that you failed to housetrain your dog. If you’re going to embark on this quest, you had better learn some professional carpet cleaner secrets so you can deal with urine stains.
A professional carpet cleaner would know the sad truth – urine stains can be difficult and not all of them can actually be removed. Urine damage to your carpet depends entirely on what’s in the urine which means it depends on the pet that gave in to its primal urges. If you happen to be lucky enough to find urine that you can clean out, the first thing you should do is to immediately blot up the urine. White paper towels do the trick. There’s no need to get complicated. Drop ¼ teaspoon of the liquid dishwashing detergent of your choice in a good old cup of warm water and apply that mix to the urine stained spot. Blot, rinse and reapply. Repeat the process until you don’t see urine being transferred anymore. Two table spoons of ammonia mixed into a cup of water should follow using the same procedure, followed by a cup of white vinegar with two cups of water. Blot, rinse and reapply as well. Weigh down some white paper towels on the spot until its try.
Speed is of the essence of course –the earlier you handle it, the better the chance that you can remove it. The longer the urine stays, the more likely it is that it will damage the carpet fibers permanently. If you’re lucky you can restore the color by treating it with two tablespoons of non-sudsy ammonia mixed into a cup of water.
How about the smell? A professional carpet cleaner would never leave a job undone.
Naturally, removing the odor involves removing all the urine – doubly so when it comes to cat urine. Most things you can apply simply block or mask the smell instead of actually blocking it. A good place to look for real solutions would be pet stores or vets. Worst case, you may have to cut out that section of the carpet. Hopefully, you’ve saved some scraps to replace that new whole with. The absolute worst case scenario is if you need to remove the padding, as well as the flooring.
Good luck. What most professionals know, including a professional carpet cleaner, is that there is an element of luck in anything. If it doesn’t work, at least you’ve battled hard and tried all you can to combat the urine stain.
